The men refused to stop and fired a gun at the pursuing police officers, who fired back, the GBI said in a press release. The lawsuit continued in Georgia, where Decatur County MPs joined the lawsuit.
The suspects entered the driveway of a house and “attempted to gain entry by shooting through the door,” but left after the owner fired back, the statement said.
One of the suspects then shot an MP from Decatur County arriving at the scene, the GBI said. The deputy was taken to a local hospital for surgery and is in critical condition.
The suspects fled in their truck, which they destroyed “a short time later in a wooded area,” the statement said. A Georgia State Patrol helicopter and crew joined the manhunt after the wreckage.
One of the suspects, identified as Brad Phillips, 41, was taken into custody without further incident, the GBI said in the statement. He was charged with aggravated assault against a peace officer.
The GBI has identified the second suspect as Troy Arthur Phillips. He was arrested and is in custody.
