Two Queens cops were ambushed on Tuesday by a CUNY peace officer – who had his weapons confiscated in a previous domestic conflict, only to return them to him weeks ago, said officials. NYPD sources.
One officer was left to bleed profusely from a leg injury, while the other took a
shot in the hand in a shootout that erupted as soon as cops arrived outside the Springfield Gardens home at around 12:45 p.m., sources said.
Officers had escorted gunman Rondell Goppy’s wife to the ailing couple’s apartment at 145-86 179th St. to collect her belongings so she could stay elsewhere after a violent incident between them, sources said.
“The woman entered the 105th arrondissement this morning. She said her husband had strangled her, ” a law enforcement source told The Post.
“The domestic violence officers came home with her to pick up some things. When they got there [the husband] waiting for them on the steps with two cannons in combat position.
“He shoots the cops, they fire back,” the source said.
Goppy’s wife – who was killed in the confrontation – ended up informing police that two of their own were shot when she called 911 to report the gunfire, sources said.
The officers were rushed to hospital in Jamaica, where they were awaiting possible surgery, sources said.
The suspect worked in security for the City University of New York and owned several firearms – which were confiscated from him in July after a reported domestic incident, sources said.
He recovered his weapons in September, according to law enforcement sources.
Then last month his wife called authorities to report he had taken his passport and credit cards, sources said.
As the woman was on the phone with the 911 operator, her husband could be heard in the background saying, “Are you calling the cops again?” Before hanging up, sources said.
Three 9mm handguns belonging to the suspect were found at the scene on Tuesday, sources said.
Mayor Bill de Blasio visited Jamaica hospital on Tuesday afternoon in the wake of the shooting, according to a tweet from a spokesperson.
“. @ NYCMayor has been notified of the two NYPD officers shot dead in Queens and is on his way to hospital,” Rep. Bill Neidhardt wrote just before 1:30 p.m.
