Faces of evil and Gamelon wand were the first two of three Zelda Nintendo games released on Philips’ ill-fated CD-i system in the early 1990s. very bad – so bad that Nintendo doesn’t recognize them as canon series –but they still have a certain charm for them, and so this fan effort to rebuild them from scratch on PC is pretty neat.

Rather than remastering them, Dopply launched GameMaker and completely remade them, saying he has “definitely [improved] them, IMHO ”(with stuff like new drives and smoother framerate) over four years of part-time development.

The games are of course famous for their cutscenes, which are still around, with the fact that Gamelon’s wand have you played as Zelda, but these remakes also did a really good job bringing out the background art of the game ‘Sierra’s early 90s ass’.

You can download the games (and read a bit about their creation) here.

UPDATE: The creator of the game has since took to twitter to say:

Hi everyone, the attention I have received has been quite overwhelming – I am amazed at the positive impressions.

However, I would like to stress that this is a free, not-for-profit business, and above all a learning exercise for me. As such, I will be removing the game from the download soon.

While torrents should live for a while, if you want to download the game from the other links, you should get in quickly.
