(CNN) – Two Spirit Airlines officers were injured and one was hospitalized after a carry-on baggage dispute with three passengers turned violent on Sunday, according to a Spirit Airlines spokesperson.

Flight 646 from Detroit to Atlanta was on board when officers asked passengers to verify their carry-on baggage was the correct size for the plane, Spirit Airlines spokesperson Field Sutton told CNN .

The passengers then became “combative,” Sutton said, and officers “calmly attempted to defuse the situation but were physically assaulted by these passengers as they closed a door to prevent them from boarding the plane.” .

“This violent behavior is totally unacceptable and has absolutely no place in airports or any other place of business,” Sutton said.

“At Spirit, we all wish the officers a speedy recovery and thank them for their courage and professionalism.”

The Wayne County Airports Authority Police Department arrested two people and a third person was named and released, according to spokeswoman Lisa Gass.

The three passengers are banned from all future travel with the airline, Sutton said.
