ENGLEWOOD, Colorado – Two-time Super Bowl champion Tony Jones has died,
Jones, a 13-year-old NFL veteran, played four seasons for the Broncos in tackling from 1997 to 2000. He was the team’s right tackle in their first world championship season in 1997 and held the future Hall of Famer Reggie White bagless at Super Bowl XXXII. Jones then moved to the left tackle in 1998 as Denver won another title. Jones won Pro Bowl honors this season protecting the blind side of John Elway.
The 6-foot-5, 290-pound player has started all 60 games he appeared in during his four seasons in Denver. Jones joined the Browns as an undrafted player in 1988 and spent eight seasons at Cleveland. Jones was a second All-Pro team in 1994.
Jones then spent the 1996 season with the Ravens before the Broncos traded a second-round pick for him in February 1997.
A native of Royston, Ga., Jones was named a member of the Broncos’ Top 100 squad in 2019. The roster celebrated the big names in the franchise and was voted on by fans.
DenverBroncos.com also ranked Jones as the fourth-best tackle in team history for 2016.
“We’ve lost a great man,” Ring of Fame wide receiver Rod Smith said on Instagram on Friday. “It turned out to be just one hell of a ball game. We love you and miss you Bone. One of the best Broncos tackles of all time. Greatest dresser of ALL TIME! “
Three-time All-Pro tackle Willie Anderson also remembered Jones, calling him on Twitter “a grandfather, friend, offensive tackle, coach and coach.”
Football Hall of Fame pro Steve Atwater was also close to Jones as the two lived close to each other after their NFL careers.
“He was a great guy, really nice,” Atwater said. “Great football player – bad, bad. He’s the kind of guy you want to go to war with if you go to war. And we were really good friends. We lived in the same neighborhood when we lived in Georgia – lived in Sugarloaf there. We had a really good friendship. … he and another friend of mine, we had lunch a bit before we moved out of Atlanta, he took me to lunch. I still remember what how nice a guy he was, how great he was with his kids. A good guy, man. “
