Honorary star of the game Joe Nuxhall Memorial
It's hard to imagine a better start to the season than what the Cincinnati Reds got from Tyler Mahle on Thursday, especially when you know he only really did the opening day lineup because of the weakness of Alex Wood's back.
From the start, Mahle took control and finally shot six scoreless innings, scattering 5 hits, scoring no goals, and eliminating 5 Pittsburgh Pirates at night. He needed only 78 shots to do it too, and would probably have stayed in the match for another round (at least) if the Reds had not chosen to use a claw hitter in the top of the 7th in one of the very, very few goal chances that the game had seen so far.
Mahle's congratulations for his excellent performance, including hitting the spots on a regular basis and making his ball break as well as he did during his two-year term as Red .
Honorable mentions must be awarded to: Scott Schebler, who doubled to end his opening season (and who walked) 0-iron sequence; Jesse Winker, who chose to end his 0-iron season opening sequence; and Tucker Barnhart, who distinguished and doubled.
Key Games
- Mahle came out after 6 brilliant innings and David Hernandez took over for the bottom of the 7th. Honestly, he did not throw too badly, but the Pirates managed to get into the race. Melky Cabrera chooses RF with 1 exit to start thinking, and the fast Pablo Reyes rushes for him at this point. That turned out to be important, since it went from the 1st to the 3rd on a "single" one. from JB Shuck on the right side who was entitled to a hit only when 2B Jose Peraza broke at 2B to cover while Reyes had taken off early for a hit and a dribbler left the runners on 1B and 3B. Hernandez then kicked Kevin Newman on the ground, but he was hit so softly that the only game was a 1B draw, and Reyes brought home for the first run. The reds trailed 1-0.
-
Michael Lorenzen then took the lead for the bottom of the eighth and quickly allowed Starling Marte, Francisco Cervelli and Josh Bell to play in singles, the latter of which led in another heat that left the Reds in a hole 2-0.
- The Reds did not dig out of this hole. The reds lost, 2-0.

Other notes
- The Reds entered the game tonight, last in all MLB games. Then they shut up again.
- It's funny!
- It will be fun.
- All this will be incredibly fun.
- The Reds actually hit a number of balls hard enough early in the game, but the ball just did not carry one iota in the cool April evening in Pittsburgh. Dear God, I do not care about this offense.
-
Sonny Gray will try to recall the memory of his violent debut at the Reds Friday night, insofar as he will be the star of the Reds in the second game of this series. Joe Musgrove, the starter of the Pirates, will oppose him. The first pitch will be re-established at 7:05 pm.
