Hubert Davis was quick to win on the recruiting trail in his first summer as UNC head coach, winning the 2022 class of engagements forward. Jalen washington, Guardian Seth Trimble, and center Shaver. The search for a scoring fin took a bit longer but ended on Wednesday, as Tyler Nickel announced its commitment to UNC.
“It’s a great opportunity at a great school and the best place for me,” said Nickel.
Nickel, a 6-foot-7 wing from Elkton (Va.) East Rockingham, entered the Tar Heels three days after his official visit to Chapel Hill. He was also considering Virginia Tech, Iowa, and LSU.
“They have a lot of good pieces there now, but one thing they said they needed now is a scoring winger,” Nickel said of the Tar Heels. “It’s what I bring to the table and it’s probably the most notable thing about my game. The fact that it’s a need for them gives me a good opportunity to come in and be that.”
Ranked # 79 in 2022 class according to 247Sports, Nickel is known for his attack and motor skills.
“He’s a lot of fun to watch,” said Eric Bossi, national recruiting director for 247Sports. “He’s got tenacity, skill and a lot of confidence. He hits timely jumpers and isn’t afraid to plow contact for a conversion to the rim. He’s a versatile shooter and offensive player. “
Nickel averaging 33.7 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game for an East Rockingham team that finished second in the state earlier this year.
“The three words that describe his game to me are skill, endurance and versatility,” said Carey Keyes, East Rockingham head coach. “It’s just tough cover, a smaller player than he can post. He’s really good on the rebound. He’s really extended his range, and I think that’s huge for him. His engine, when I was talking to Coach May, he said that was what Coach Davis noticed the most, how hard he played and his engine. “
Davis and his team have been aggressively recruiting Nickel since early May. They first saw Nickel perform live during one of the June school evaluation periods. This weekend, Davis and his three assistants – Brad Frederick, Jeff Lebo and Sean May – were at the Rise Indoor Sports Center in Bermuda Run, NC to watch East Rockingham’s morning game against Charlotte (NC) Independence.
Nickel delivered, showcasing his full offensive play by scoring 34 points (shooting 4v8 on three runs) in the win. Davis followed up on this impressive viewing with a scholarship offer the next day.
“It was a great feeling knowing that a program like North Carolina said I checked all of those boxes,” Nickel said. In August, Nickel announced a list of its top five schools: UNC, Virginia Tech, LSU, Butler, and Iowa. He ultimately only officially visited two of his finalists – Virginia Tech and UNC. And after visiting Chapel Hill, he had seen enough and announced his commitment to the Tar Heels.
“I want to play at the next level,” Nickel said of his top recruiting priority. “I want to go to a school that can help me grow and get there.”
