Tyler Perry speaks on new election legislation that was enacted by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp last week.
Perry, who runs a huge television and film studio in Atlanta, released a statement to the Hollywood Reporter denouncing the new legislation, saying it was “unconstitutional” and calling on the Department of Justice to open an investigation into it. he calls a “voter suppression” law. ”

“As a Georgia resident and business owner, I’ve been here a few times with the anti-abortion bill and the LGBTQ discrimination bill,” Perry said in his point-of-sale statement. “They all sent a shock wave across Georgia and the country but none of them succeeded.”
The star then called on the Justice Department to look into the new law, which was passed by Governor Kemp last Thursday after quickly passing through the state legislature.

“I am hopeful that the DOJ will carefully examine this unconstitutional voter suppression law reminiscent of the Jim Crow era,” he continued. “As some consider boycotting, remember we made Georgia blue and there is a gubernatorial race on the horizon – that’s the beauty of a democracy.”
Perry’s comments echo those of President Joe Biden who also tied the law to apartheid-era politics.

“Republicans across the state rushed through non-US law to deny people the right to vote. This law, like so many others being pursued by Republicans in states across the country, is a blatant attack on the Constitution and on good conscience, ”Biden said.

“Among the scandalous parts of this new state law, it ends voting hours earlier so workers cannot vote after their shift is over.
