To be fair to Hill, he wasn’t the only one thinking.

Nine other NFL teams took advantage of an opportunity to draft Mahomes before the Chiefs caught him in 10th place – this list includes the Chicago Bear, who traded to No.2 and picked Mitchell Trubisky out of North Carolina.

But the plan was not for Mahomes to join Kansas City and immediately take over the offensive. He sat behind Alex Smith for a year, and by the time Hill got the chance to reassess Mahomes the following season, he completely changed his mind.

“This second year his quarterback mechanics were different,” said Hill. “It was like he was spending more time with his quarterback coach, spending more time with his coach [Andy] Reid learns of the offense. Dude was different. “

The rest of the league learned the same pretty quickly.

Mahomes had 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in his first full season as a starter, winning the NFL MVP in the process. He would capture the Super Bowl MVP the following year and sign a half-billion dollar contract extension shortly thereafter.

Hill may not have seen the big picture in his first training session with Mahomes, but he certainly now understands as Kansas City remains the league’s model franchise.
