The Los Angeles Lakers were hoping to find a long-term solution for head coach Luke Walton. While surviving predecessors Mike Brown, Mike D'Antoni and Byron Scott, Walton's tenure ended after just three seasons.

He spent much of the NBA 2018-1919 season in the hot seat, including after a controversial meeting with former Lakers basketball president Magic Johnson. Walton's fate was apparently almost decided at the end of the season, but some beliefs changed with Johnson's sudden resignation.

Three days after Johnson's resignation, the Lakers and Walton cut the ties. Although presented as a mutual decision, a report suggested that Walton hoped to stay with the franchise. Three days later, however, he got up again by officially being hired as head coach of the Sacramento Kings.

At the same time, the Lakers' research was mainly focused on Tyronn Lue, former head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Monty Williams, assistant of the Philadelphia 76ers. according to Brad Turner of L.A. Times, Lue must meet Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka this week:

Pelinka and the Lakers are also expected to head to the East Coast for a meeting with Williams before the third game of the Sixers first-round playoff with the Brooklyn Nets. Philadelphia's win Monday night tied them up.

Lue was fired by Cavs after a season start of 0-6. He played 211-183 in four years at the helm, which included three consecutive trips to the finals of the NBA and a championship.
