As for Tyson Fury, his feud with Deontay Wilder is over even though his rival might not feel the same.
Fury beat Wilder by KO in the 11th round on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, putting an exclamation mark on their trilogy of fights and giving Fury a 2-0-1 lead in the series. With the win, Fury also retained his WBC and The Ring heavyweight titles.
Afterward, Fury wanted to shake the hand of a man with whom he had nearly 30 rounds, but Wilder apparently didn’t. Fury explained the exchange during the evening’s post-fight press conference when asked what was different between his second and third fights with Wilder.
“He got better, he worked on his boxing and stuff,” Fury said. “It was a different fight. It was a very different fight from Fight 2, and a very different fight from Fight 1. He came very heavy tonight, 238 pounds, and I think that helped him and he was definitely hitting solid.
“But you know what, I thought we fought everything there and all the allegations that were made against me all the way up to preparing for this fight, we fought like two warriors there and I went shake his hand and say, “Well done,” and he said, “No, I don’t respect you.” I was like, how can you say I cheated when you know in your own heart and your whole team knows you just got beaten fair and square. He’s just a sore loser in boxing, I’m sure he’s not the first and he won’t be the last, but I have acted like a gentleman throughout my career and thats all i can do as a man.
Ahead of the trilogy fight, Wilder and his team brought up past accusations that Fury cheated in their second fight, which Fury won by TKO in round 7. With back-to-back wins over Wilder now, Fury is hoping to come out of the box. rivalry.
Saturday’s fight between the two heavyweight stars was a thriller and Wilder actually put Fury in jeopardy in the fourth round with a pair of knockdowns. Fury acknowledged Wilder’s much-vaunted knockout power, but said he was never in danger.
“You play with fire long enough, you’re going to get burned,” Fury said. “I had three fights with the biggest puncher in the history of my sport in my division and he caught up to me. He caught up to me twice in the fourth round, but I never thought, “Aw, it’s over. I was thinking, ‘Okay, well, but I’ll get you back in a minute.’ And I did. I was very aware, I saw the referee go “three, four” and I was still there, you know? He shook me, he knocked me down, and that’s boxing.
“It is also life. It’s not about how many times you get shot or how many times you lose or win, but how you can come back and keep getting up and keep moving forward, as Rocky said. You have to keep moving forward in a positive way and keep fighting. Not just in a boxing match, but in life in general because nothing will ever be easy. If you want something very hard to get you have to sacrifice yourself and dedicate yourself and keep pushing no matter what and never let anyone tell you that you can’t because tonight again, time and time again, I show that it is very possible to achieve everything you ever wanted as long as you believe in it here.
Fury is widely regarded as the No.1 heavyweight in all of boxing and his back-to-back knockouts of Wilder only serve to strengthen his case. There are others who may be looking to claim the throne in the near future, namely undefeated Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk, who recently won an impressive unanimous decision over Anthony Joshua.
While Usyk now appears to have passed Joshua in the race for a potential duel with Fury, “The Gypsy King” isn’t committing to anything just yet.
“We’ll see,” Fury said when asked about his interest in a fight with Usyk. “I just won a well-deserved break from everything. I was away from my family for a total of six months. I’ve been home for two weeks out of the last six months, so before I start thinking about fighting other men, I’m going to look forward to this win tonight as one of my biggest wins. I got up to do it and I’m the big dog in the division.
“I’m probably one of the heaviest heavyweight champions in history tonight, 277 pounds, and I was in good shape, I was strong in there, I felt great. We will just see what brings today and tomorrow too.
