U.S. Capitol Police are investigating Maryland GOP Representative Andy Harris’ report attempted to bring gun to ground

“USCP is investigating the matter,” officials confirmed to HuffPost and CBS Baltimore.

Following the murderous pro-Trump siege on Capitol Hill earlier this month, magnetometers and other security measures were installed outside the chamber.

A HuffPost reporter saw Harris set off the metal detectors as he attempted to enter the bedroom on Thursday.

When an officer with a metal detection wand scanned it, a gun was detected on Harris’ side, concealed by his coat, according to the outlet. The reporter saw an officer signaling to a security guard that Harris had a gun on him, gesturing towards his own gun.

A Capitol official later confirmed at the outlet that Harris carried a gun.

When asked for comment, Harris’s office said in a statement: “Because his life and that of his family have been threatened by someone who has been released pending trial, for charges. For security reasons, the congressman never confirms whether he or anyone else with whom he is in possession of a firearm for self-defense. Publicly, he has a Maryland handgun license. And the congressman still complies with House metal detectors and wands. The congressman never carried a firearm on the floor of the House.

Lawmakers are allowed to carry firearms in their offices and on Capitol Hill grounds, but they are prohibited from bringing firearms on home floors.

Katko reportedly refused to hold the gun, saying he did not have “a license”.

According to HuffPost, Harris left the area and returned about 10 minutes later. He did not trigger the magnetometer the second time around and was allowed to enter the floor of the House to vote on a waiver allowing the military to retire. However, these fines have not yet entered into force. The House will not vote to enact them until it returns to session the week of February 2, according to a spokesperson for Pelosi.

Confidence between the two sides has reached its lowest level since the attack. Some lawmakers are worried about colleagues who may carry guns – a Republican, Rep. Madison Cawthorn (North Carolina), has confirmed he was armed during the riot.
