American Ryan Crouser set an Olympic record in the shot put on Thursday and won a gold medal at the Tokyo Games.
It was Crouser’s second individual Olympic gold medal as he scored 23.30 and he dedicated the victory to his late grandfather, who died a week before the Games started. Crouser had a piece of paper with him and held it in front of the cameras: “Grandpa, we did it, 2020 Olympic champion!

He broke the Olympic record on his first throw, then his own record on the second. He finally settled for the distance of 23.30 on the sixth throw.

“Losing him the week before the Olympics was obviously sad. But I feel like he may have been here in spirit,” he said.

Crouser was the first American to win gold in a track and field event this summer.
“Along with you cheering on the most fantastic thing, there’s just that little word ‘I wish Grandpa was here’,” Ryan’s mom Lisa said during the celebration of her comeback. Oregon. “You know he’s watching.
Crouser’s teammate Joe Kovacs finished with the silver medal. Tom Walsh of New Zealand won the bronze medal.

Courser won gold at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Ironically, it was Kovacs and Walsh who also finished just behind him for silver and bronze.
