The US Department of Labor said Thursday that the number of new EI claims has increased by 5,000 to an average level considering seasonal factors of 215,000 claims for the week ending October 20th.

Data from the previous week have not been adjusted.

Orders fell to 202,000 during the week ending September 15th, the lowest since November 1969.

Economists polled by Reuters expected the number of registered unemployed to increase to 214,000 last week.

The average of four weeks' orders, which is a more precise measure of the labor market because it excludes weekly volatility, remained unchanged at 211,750.

The US labor market is near or near full employment, with the unemployment rate approaching the lowest in 49 years at 3.7%. The number of vacancies reached a record 7.14 million, indicating a shortage of skilled labor.
