NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has announced that, for the first time, antibiotic-resistant bacteria belonging to dangerous strains of bacteria have been found in the station's latrines.
According to Science Alert, this type of bacteria can infect people whose immune systems are compromised in hospitals, but powerful antibiotics never affect them.
What interested the scientists is that they discovered 5 different species of supernatural bacteria on board the station. Studies have shown that existing strains have near-absolute resistance to cephazolin, cefoxetin, oxycillin, penicillin and rifampin, as well as to varying degrees of resistance to other antibiotics.
The researchers suggest that astronauts could bring these species to Earth, where they have been found to be similar to terrestrial bacteria.
Scientists are now trying to understand how other bacterial strains have changed from space and if they pose a threat to the lives of astronauts aboard the station.
