Wednesday's hot, dry weather could ignite a California wildfire near Yosemite National Park as firefighters fight the flames amid dense cliffs and smoke to protect small mountain communities.
The Ferguson Fire, which broke out Friday night and killed a firefighter the next day, occurred on nearly 52 square kilometers and just a few miles from the park.
The National Weather Service predicted that temperatures would reach 42 degrees Celsius Wednesday, while humidity would be low.
A spokeswoman for the fire department said that a thick layer of black smoke was preventing helicopters and planes from spraying water from fires by flying low in narrow valleys.
Investigators still have to find a cause for the 5 percent fire by Wednesday.
California had the worst start of the fire season in 10 years, with more than 220,421 acres burned and six fires burning in the state by Tuesday.
