Gianni Infantino, president of the International Football Association (FIFA), has returned to two new world championships on the agenda of FIFA. Members plan to discuss proposals Friday.
The FIFA council meets in Kigali, Rwanda, and Infanteño plans to create a "mini world cup" and increase the size of the World Cup clubs on other topics, in accordance with the agenda of the meeting.
FIFA has not yet responded to a request for comment and it is not clear if the council will vote on the plans.
Infantino wrote to FIFA members in May to explain his plans, which, he said, were supported by a group of "strong and serious" investors willing to spend $ 25 billion over a period of time. 12 years old starting in 2021.
The letter did not specify the identity of investors, but several media reported that the Japanese group Softbank led the consortium.
But the projects have faced stiff opposition from clubs and leagues in Europe, and the president of the European Football Federation, Alexander Chifrin, said that they were "imperfect and of a commercial nature" and accused FIFA of selling the spirit of the match.
These proposals were not on the agenda of the annual FIFA conference, which was held in Moscow in June.
Infantino's projects will bring huge changes to the international agenda.
The proposals provide for what could become an eight-team mini world cup, held every two years, in addition to the traditional World Cup.
The tournament, known as the "Eight Best," will be the culmination of a world tournament for nations.
In the May speech, Infantino proposed the new tournament, in October and November, the odd years of 2021. The Confederations Cup, which takes place every four years the year before the World Cup, will be canceled.
The seven-team World Cup, which takes place each year with seven teams, will grow to 24 and will be held once every four years, in line with Infantino's proposals.
