Meek won the European Championship Formula 3 this year with eight wins, seven points and seven podiums. He had the right to compete in Formula 1.
Mercedes driver Rene Rosen said Tuesday in a statement that he was a very talented and committed driver. I am happy to work with him and wait for the hottest embers to start the adventure together.
"This category is not easy because of the learning curve for novice drivers, especially with the new car, but we trust Meek's maturity and skills."
The young German driver said that this step made sense in the motor sport structure and would help him develop his skills and gain more experience.

Schumacher Jr. will test at Prima in Abu Dhabi.
World champion Lewis Hamilton said five times in October that he was expecting a bright future for Schumacher.
At the time, Mercedes had declared that Schumacher Jr would be 100% Formula 1, make a great race at the World Championships and become an excellent driver.
Schumacher has won the Formula 1 record seven times, including five consecutive titles with Ferrari, and has a record 91 races.
Schumacher, 49, the most titled driver in the history of Formula 1, has not been publicly revealed since he suffered a serious head injury while skiing in France in 2013.
