Uber driver pleads guilty to kidnapping sleepy passenger

NEW YORK – A man driving for Uber in New York pleaded guilty on Monday to kidnapping a woman who was falling asleep in her car and leaving her on a Connecticut roadside.

Harbir Parmar, 25, of Queens, faces life imprisonment after pleading guilty in US District Court under counts of kidnapping and wire.

The kidnapping took place in February 2018 after the woman had asked Manhattan to go to her home in White Plains, NY, about an hour away.

Prosecutors said that Parmar had changed destination to settle in Boston after falling asleep. The woman told the authorities that she had woken up in Parmar by feeling her in the back seat, passing under her shirt.

According to the federal press, the woman took her phone, but Parmar took the camera and continued to drive. He refused the woman's request to take her to a police station and finally left her on the Interstate 95 side in Branford, Connecticut, about an hour's drive from At her place.

Authorities said the woman had memorized Parmar's license plate and called a taxi from a nearby convenience store.

Last year, Uber had told the Associated Press agency that he had prevented Parmar from using his app after the kidnapping. The company declared to cooperate fully with the forces of the order.

Parmar also pleaded guilty to wire fraud for charging racers too much by entering false information about their destinations. Prosecutors said the fraud amounted to thousands of dollars.

Parmar must be sentenced on June 24th.
