Two major automakers have just released "Ubered" Uber.
Last year, Uber CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, said he wanted the application to meet all the criteria: individual travel, carpool, food deliveries, e-bikes, electric scooters, autonomous vehicles and even flying taxis. He wanted Uber to become "the Amazon of Transport".
But on Friday, German companies Daimler (of Mercedes-Benz) and BMW announced that they were investing 1 billion euros ($ 1.13 billion) to offer many of the same services.
As part of this plan (which will initially focus on Europe but could expand worldwide), the two companies will combine existing services and businesses with new transportation options.
The initiative will focus on five areas:
Reach now
Bike and scooter rentals are associated with bus or carpool trips.
Park now
It involves connecting drivers to parking services, whether in garages or on the street. Companies like Parkmobile Group (owned by BMW) have integrated parking payments into car infotainment systems and mobile applications.
Share now
A combination of carpool services, including Car2Go and DriveNow, allowing other drivers to use your car when it is not in use.
Charge now
Companies want to connect electric vehicles to the Digital Charging Solutions network, which has 143,000 charging stations worldwide.
Free now
That's the overall vision of BMW and Daimler, which includes cab rides, taxis, private car rides, rentals, electric scooters – basically anything that can take you where you want to go. Options include the Daimler-owned Mytaxi, Chauffeur PrivĂ©, Clever Taxi and Beat cards, all of which offer different driving options in different parts of the world, such as mytaximatch, which combines taxis traveling to a similar location. Mytaxi changes its name and becomes Free Now as part of the new partnership.
BMW and Daimler report that their services in these five industries already include 60 million customers. Looks like Uber has serious competition.
