During a call to Ubisoft investors tonight, CEO Yves Guillemot was asked what his vision for Valve’s Steam Deck was. In short: Ubisoft will keep an eye on it.
“We are happy to see Steam Deck coming into the industry,” said Guillemot. “It shows that there continues to be a flow of very innovative new material coming into the market so we’re going to watch and see how big it gets. If it’s big, we can put our games in there.”
It’s about as elusive as you’d expect from a CEO when calling an investor, but it’s interesting nonetheless. Currently, Ubisoft has over a hundred games available on Steam, almost all of which will work on the Steam Deck at launch without Ubisoft having to do anything.
More recently however, Ubisoft has kept its games off Steam and released them through Ubisoft Conect and the Epic Games Store. This includes Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Watch Dogs: Legion.
Maybe if Steam Deck gets big enough, it’ll be an added incentive for Ubisoft to bring its new games back to Steam and make it to Valve’s biggest percentage of sales. Steam takes between 20-30% of game sales against the much smaller Epic Games Store 12%.
Of course, Ubisoft games don’t need to come to Steam to be playable on the Steam Deck. It’s an end-to-end PC, which means you can just install Windows on it and then install Ubisoft Connect or the Epic Games Store yourself. Steam’s game library is also already huge, which means I’m less interested in publishers bringing more games to the Steam Deck than I’m supporting games already there with controller setups and redesigns. user interface adapted to the shape and screen of the Steam Deck. .
