It may not be long before Gus Malzahn runs another football program.

UCF, who lost the head coach Josh Heupel in Tennessee last month, Malzahn offered the job, multiple sources told Auburn Undercover on Sunday. The Orlando Sentinel also reported the news on Sunday night.

Sources told Auburn Undercover earlier today that Malzahn has become the main candidate in the Knights’ head coach search, and that the new UCF athletic director Terry mohajir is done with interviews and hopes to appoint a new head coach this week.

Heupel was hired in Tennessee by the school’s new athletic director, Danny white, who was recently hired at UCF. The Knights replaced him with Mohajir from the state of Arkansas.

Malzahn and Mohajir were together at Arkansas State during a Malzahn season with the Red Wolves in 2012.

Auburn parted ways with Malzahn on December 13. He went 68-35 in eight seasons with the Tigers, including an SEC Championship and a BCS National Championship appearance. Auburn also made the SEC title match in 2017 and appeared in two New Years Balls under Malzahn in addition to the domestic championship match. After his miraculous first season in 2013, however, Auburn lost four or more games in each of the following seven seasons.

Bryan Harsin was hired in Boise State to replace Malzahn on December 22.

Auburn owes Malzahn a buyout of $ 21.45 million, half of which has already been paid within the first 30 days of his dismissal, under the terms of his contract. His contract extension with Auburn, signed in 2017, did not include any mitigation of Auburn’s payment totals if Malzahn agreed to follow-up work.
