The middleweight clash between Yoel Romero and Paulo Costa had the feeling of "blinking and you'll miss it" in front of UFC 241. The knockout might not have happened, but it was not for lack of trying one or the other man.
In the end, Costa made a tight (and controversial) decision in a fight that will enter many fight lists of the year.
A huge Costa left hand dropped Romero about a minute after the start of the first round. Moments later, it's Romeo who dropped Costa with his own powerful shot. Unfortunately, Romero collapsed on the canvas after Costa's knee landed in the groin, thus putting an end to the wild action of the first round.
After taking a few moments to recover, Romeo was able to continue. Despite the slight delay in the violence, the men immediately returned to stray fire with malicious intent for the rest of the first third.
Costa opted for a heavy body attack in the second round, never releasing the throttle while Romero was forced to turn back to try to hit his shots that could end the battle. At the end of the second round, it was officially the longest fight of Costa's still young career. As he took several deep breaths and Romero took it in the final seconds of the round, his lack of deep water fighting was beginning to manifest itself.
Romero started the final round with a few clean punches on Costa's face. Despite an obvious tiredness, Costa continued to throw big punches as well as kicks of body. Two minutes into the third minute, it seems the two men agreed to drop everything. Romero continued as the crowd approved his move after three rounds of violence.
Once the fight ended, the judges awarded the fight to Costa by 29 to 28 on the set of goals, a decision that caused a markedly mixed reaction from supporters present.
Costa took part in the # 7 middleweight fight, while Romero was # 2. Even though Costa can win some spots, it will be difficult to knock Romero down after his performance.
