HOUSTON – Derrick Lewis, who will headline Saturday’s UFC 265 main event against Ciryl Gane, earned his first UFC title three years ago against Daniel Cormier. The self-deprecating slugger made fun of himself – and his heavyweight peers – before this fight.

“If I’m the champion, the whole UFC division should be ashamed of a guy who didn’t have any damn skill as a champion,” Lewis said at the time. “They should all move somewhere.… Did you see my fights? Did you see my technique?”

Cormier beat Lewis at UFC 230 in November 2018 via a second round submission, but since then the man who calls himself “The Black Beast” has improved tremendously. He’s won four in a row and on Saturday he’ll get another shot for gold in the UFC when he fights for the interim heavyweight title at the Toyota Center.

The card is built around Lewis, a Houston resident, who combines humor with one of the scariest playoff powers in UFC history. Lewis’ winner against Gane is expected to be next for heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. ESPN has Lewis and Gane ranked No. 3 and No. 4 in heavyweight respectively.

Lewis (25-7, 1 NC) has the most KO / TKO wins in UFC heavyweight history (12). The mark also puts him in a tie at three for most knockouts in all UFC divisions, with Vitor Belfort and Matt Brown. Lewis, 36, is coming off a second round knockout victory over Curtis Blaydes in February.

Gane (9-0) is one of the most promising fighters in the UFC. With a victory on Saturday, Gane will become the first French-born fighter to win a UFC title. Gane, 31, has only been training in MMA for three years and has an impressive 6-0 record in the UFC.

In the main co-event, two bantamweight contenders will face off: MMA legend Jose Aldo and Pedro Munhoz. Aldo (29-7) is the longtime former UFC / WEC featherweight champion. Munhoz (19-5, 1 NC) has won four of his last six fights. Also on the card, Vicente Luque meets Michael Chiesa in a top welterweight battle, strawweight contenders Tecia Torres and Angela Hill go head to head and Casey Kenney takes on Song Yadong in a promising bantamweight bout.

Men’s bantamweight: Johnny Munoz (11-1, 1-1 UFC) defeats Jamey Simmons (7-4, 0-2 UFC) by second round submission

Training in one of MMA’s hottest gyms has clearly done Munoz good.

After spending his training camp with Brandon Moreno at Entram Gym in Tijuana, Munoz claimed his first UFC victory by submission (rear choke) at 2:35 of the second round.

“When he goes to the ground, nobody has anything for me there,” Munoz said.

Munoz knocked Simmons out at the end of the first round, but didn’t have enough time to work on it. In the second, however, he knocked Simmons off for just a minute in the frame. From there, Munoz picked up Simmons, put on the hooks and applied the choke. Simmons had no choice but to type.

Munoz, 28, lost the first fight of his career on his UFC debut last August to Nate Maness by unanimous decision. The California native is a former King of the Cage bantamweight champion. Simmons, a 28-year-old fighter from Wisconsin, has lost two games in a row and is still chasing his first UFC win.
