What was most important at the UFC on ESPN 2 in Philadelphia on Saturday? Here's one thing or five …
1. Attention, Gaethje will pick you
To borrow a line from Sheriff Teasle: What did God have in heaven to make a man like Justin Gaethje? This guy, he fights as if he had a debt that can only be repaid by pain and blood – yours or his, no matter. It will continue to advance until enough human damage has been done. And he will really enjoy it, in his own way.
You may think that Edson Barboza would be equipped to deal with this. He is a veteran fighter. He can win a technical strike battle, but he can also go for it when he needs to. But then Gaethje threw it into a slugfest and Barboza could not say no. He was also so busy trying to free himself from this pressure of Gaethje that he forgot to keep his hands in the air at the exit. Next stop: the country of wind and ghosts.
Now, Gaethje has two consecutive wins after suffering both consecutive losses and we are once again wondering what to do with it. Is it legitimate championship material or is it just a Rock 'Em Sock' Em robot? In a perfect world, maybe it could even be both.
