UFC Vegas 38 crashed last night (Saturday, October 2, 2021) inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, with Thiago Santos back on the winning track after winning a unanimous decision over Johnny Walker (to review here). The main co-event bout between Kevin Holland and Kyle Daukaus ended in a “No Contest” after an unintentional clash of heads sent “Trail Blazer” crashing to the canvas. Although Daukaus ended up subduing Holland moments later, UFC officials opted to cancel the win after seeing the replay (full details here).
Biggest winner: Thiago Santos
It took a bitter 25-minute war to bring Santos back to the winning column, but the hard-hitting Brazilian got the job done against Walker. The victory was much needed as the former Light Heavyweight title challenger was on a three-game losing streak with his last victory over current division king Jan Blachowicz in 2019. With a win in his back pocket, Santos has maintaining the pressure of his shoulders avoiding sinking into a deeper hole. Currently ranked No.5, “Marreta” could find himself in the middle of the championship picture sooner rather than later if he can rack up a few more impressive wins.
Finalist: take your pick!
There have been several fighters who have had big wins on this map, so let’s go ahead and give them the love they deserve. Alexander Hernandez came out like a bat out of hell, overtaking Mike Breeden in the first round to return to the win column (highlights). Of course, Breeden was a late replacement, but credit is never given to the person who accepts a change of opponent. Hernandez adapted and won in a spectacular way. Additionally, Casey O’Neill improved to 8-0 (3-0) in the UFC after securing a second round knockout victory over Antonina Shevchenko (see here). And, of course, Niko Price clinched a well-deserved victory over Alex Oliveira, putting him back in the winner’s circle for the first time in two years after going 0-2-1 during that span. And how can you forget Jamie Mullarkey’s knockout victory over Devonte Smith?
Biggest loser: Alex Oliveira
As he walked down to the cage, Oliveira was visibly shaken and to tears. It’s unclear what made “Cowboy” get so emotional, and it’s unclear whether it affected his performance against Price, who took the unanimous decision victory after 15 minutes of action. Nonetheless, the loss was Oliveira’s third in a row, having last tasted victory in July 2020. It’s a huge hole for the longtime veteran to dig, and it’s his second streak of three. back-to-back defeats since 2018. Overall, Oliveira is only 2-6 in his last eight fights.
