The extraterrestrial abduction that occurs in the lyrics of Big Thief's new song, "UFOF," is almost as strange and beautiful as that of music. Throughout their catalog, the Brooklyn-based quartet is a classy band, unrelated to the past; intimate without the need to define a specific emotion. "UFOF", the title track of their third album (and their first album for 4AD), is a fantasy that should be familiar to anyone who grew up in a small place to make you feel different.
Since the beginning, Big Thief has excelled in finding new lenses for familiar scenes, and "UFOF" extends its reach to science fiction. The rhythm of the acoustic guitars on the finger and the hermetic rhythms form a new type of groove for the band – their version, perhaps, of an arpeggiated synth and a drum loop. "I imagine you're getting me out of here," sings Adrianne Lenker, looking up at the sky as the music collapses. And when nothing comes to save her, she has no choice but to do it herself.
