LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – It’s a statewide effort to speed up vaccine distribution.
On Thursday, the state announced a partnership with Kroger that will offer drive-thru vaccines to Groups 1A, 1B, and 1C starting the first week of February. This includes essential workers and people at high risk of complications from COVID-19.
The sites will be regional, so people across the state will have access to them. While locations have yet to be announced, the City of Lexington website says it is ready to host a site.
The University of Kentucky is also joining the effort with a vaccination clinic in the Kroger Field Blue Lot starting Tuesday. It will focus on Groups 1A and 1B, which are aimed at healthcare workers and people aged 70 and over. People can request a vaccine online, and then UK HealthCare will prioritize those requests and allow people to make appointments.
One of the challenges to date with the vaccine has been a low supply. But officials are optimistic that will change soon.
The UK plan is to vaccinate thousands of people every day, six days a week, but they are a reminder to the community that it will take several more months to reach everyone. They ask people to be patient.
