Five children were killed this weekend when a vehicle veered off a Maryland road and crashed into a snowy wooded area, authorities said.
Investigators said that a van had veered off the left side of a road in Bowie, Maryland, and had crashed against several trees around 5 am Saturday, killing five children and injuring two adults, according to Maryland police.
Police identified the children as London Dixon, age 8, and Paris Dixon, age 5, siblings, Rickelle Ricks, age 6, Zion Beard, age 14, and Damari Herald, age 15.
The children, members of an extended family, were ejected from the back seat of the 2005 Chrysler Pacifica and were declared dead on the scene.
It seems that they have not been mastered properly, said Captain Daniel Pickett, of the Maryland State Police, at a press conference held on Saturday.
"At the moment, we have not excluded any cause or circumstance that may have contributed to this collision, and we are looking at all aspects," said Pickett. "The investigation is early. We will do a thorough investigation and find the cause."
Dominique Taylor, 32, the driver and mother of London and Paris, as well as one of the front seat passengers, were transported to a local hospital with unspecified wounds.
The passenger was in critical condition on Saturday afternoon, but the condition of the driver was unknown.
Investigators believe that preliminary evidence indicates that both of them were wearing seatbelts.
"Every collision where we lose life is a tragedy," Pickett said. "It's as simple as that, and when children are involved, it's more of a tragedy."
