A van carrying a family of six collided head-on with a work truck that turned in the opposite direction along a busy Delaware highway on Friday afternoon. The accident killed four children and one adult, state police said.
Four other people – including another adult in the minivan – were injured.
Melissa Jaffe stated that the brown van drove south on Delaware Highway 1 through Townsend when it drifted off the road, across the grassy median and toward the northbound traffic.
The truck hit a car injuring the driver. Four children and a parent of the minivan died in the vehicle, police said. Another adult was seriously injured and remains hospitalized.
Jaffe stated that his family came from New Jersey. The names and ages of the victims were not immediately available.
"It is certainly heartbreaking as you can imagine, those of us who have families and children, I feel so bad for this family. They spend," said Jaffe.
The driver of the work truck and his passenger suffered non-fatal injuries. The truck is owned by Aledak Metalworks, Inc., headquartered in East New Market, Maryland, approximately 65 miles southwest of the accident scene.
Route 1 – the main road connecting popular beaches like Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach. rest of the state – was closed for miles following the accident that arrived at 3:47 pm Friday near Pine Tree Road.
Drivers stranded behind the accident were either returned or diverted to secondary streets.
The north lanes of the road remained closed until 9 pm Friday night as accident investigators continue to probe the accident.
