Bacteria subjected to difficult conditions in space were surprisingly durable. Scientists hope to survive elsewhere in the solar system.
New research confirms that some of the hardest microorganisms on Earth can survive in the extreme climates of Mars, Enceladus, Europe and other planets. Scientists have discovered that microbes can withstand harsh conditions outside the Earth.

An international team of German, American and British researchers decided to work on a microbe called Planococcus halocryophilus. which usually occurs in frozen soils of the Arctic region. They subjected the bacteria to various saline chemical solutions, including sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, and calcium chloride. The bacteria were also immersed in perchlorate, a highly toxic chemical compound contained in small amounts in Mars soils.
