Augustus was shot dead during a confrontation with the police around 5:30 pm at 2098 E. 71st St., in the South Shore neighborhood, near the place where he was working at a hairdresser, according to his friend Antoine Howell, 42 years old.
Howell was still at the barbershop when he heard the shots. He stayed in the area for a few hours and then went to his party.
"I'm going to party and my friend has just been shot," Howell said.
At the party, Howell said that he did not want to talk about the shooting or his friend.
"He is a calm person, he keeps to himself, he does not disturb anyone," Howell said.
Augustus would only speak to shop guests when he needed to, said Howell. He arrived at 9 am and left at 5 pm Howell said that he had not met any family member or his daughter. Augustus does not even like people taking pictures of him, Howell says.
Howell said that his family seemed to be the guys at the hair salon. They talked and laughed about sports – especially basketball.
"He was so calm and I opened it," Howell said. "And everyone at the shop was like, how did you do that?"
Howell stated that memorials are planned for the hair salon and the scene of the shooting.
Early Sunday afternoon, the hair salon was closed.
