NEW JERSEY – When their 4-month-old son did not stop crying, a New Jersey couple covered him with a comforter and went out to smoke – only to find out later that their baby had stopped to breathe, prosecutors said Tuesday
William Herring, 42, and Brianna Brochhausen, 22, were living at Hilltop Motel, in Springfield Township, while they allegedly killed their son, Hunter, the day Valentine's Day. They decided that Hunter needed a "timeout" because he would not stop crying.
They put him on his stomach on a bed, shot him completely and left smoking, the investigators said. Hunter was not breathing when they came back.
He was taken to a local hospital, but his brain activity was minimal. Hunter breathed with the help of a respirator for several weeks and died on March 3 after withdrawing support from life.
Herring and Brochhausen were first accused of endangering the well-being of a child, but prosecutors reassessed the charges against them. They are now facing murder charges in connection with the death of their son.
"The thoughtless actions of these individuals cost the lives of a defenseless four-month-old baby," said Colonel Patrick Callahan, Superintendent of the New Jersey Police.
