The bites of a 13-year-old boy in the waters around the barrier island off the south coast of Long Island were the result of a shark attack, confirmed Friday officials from the state of New York.

But the experts were unable to determine the shark species is based on the size and condition of a tooth fragment recovered from the boy, authorities said, adding that the D & D department State of conservation of the environment will make it to the teenager at his request.
The beaches of Fire Island had reopened Thursday morning, a day after the boy and a 12-year-old girl had suffered large fish bites in the area.
Rescuers were on duty from 11 am at Atlantic Beach, where the 13-year-old boy, Matthew Donaldson, was bitten. The National Park Service surveyed Sailors Haven Beach, where the 12-year-old daughter, Lola Pollina, was bitten, and reopened this beach. Both beaches are less than 5 miles apart.
