A new video shows a man from Colorado convicted of murdering his family confessing the murder of his pregnant wife. One sees Christopher Watts telling his father that he killed his wife, Shanann, in a tantrum. He pleaded guilty this month and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
On Thursday, the Weld County District Attorney's Office released a wealth of evidence regarding the case, and described Watts as a calculated and manipulative killer, reports CBS News correspondent Jericka Duncan.
A camera on the body shows the police searching Watts' home after the disappearance of his pregnant wife and two young girls. Watts told investigators that he was worried.
"I could not sleep at all last night, I did not feel – I did not feel – I did not feel well," Watts told them.
But a few days later, in a video confession, Watts tells his father that he has murdered Shanann in a tantrum.
"I panicked and I hurt her," said Watts.
He claimed that she had killed their children.
"They were blue," said Watts.
"The two?" Asked his father.
"Yes," said Watts.
"She strangled them both?"
"I panicked, you understand me," says Watts.
"Oh my god," his father replied.
The security camera of a neighbor captured Watts backing out of his driveway with his family's bodies in his truck.
"So what did you do, detach the bodies or something?" asked his father.
"I did not know what to do," said Watts.
"It's just … it's rabies," Watts added.
"Almighty God, son," replied his father.
The bodies of 4-year-old Celeste and 3-year-old Bella were found a few days later in oil tanks where Watts worked. Shanann was found in a shallow grave nearby.
Prosecutors said Watts had killed his family because of an affair he had with a colleague, Nichol Kessinger. In a recorded interview with the police on the day Shanann and the girls were found dead, Kessinger seemed upset: "It's so sad and she's pregnant.God and they're so cute, they're so small, like why, "she said.
Although portraying a happy family on social media, text messages between Shanann and Watts in the weeks leading up to the murders showed a fractured relationship. According to court documents, on August 6, Shanann wrote to Watts: "Give me the impression that everything will be fine." Watts replied, "Everything will be fine, everything will be repaired."
A week later, his family was dead.
According to court documents, the day Watts killed his family, he called his daughters school to tell him that they would no longer be present. He also contacted a real estate agent about the sale of his house. He will spend the rest of his life in prison.
