During the photo-taking ceremony at the G20 Summit, the President of the United States met the President of the Russian Federation without paying attention to Putin or the handshake. A few days ago, the President of Russia could not assume such contempt for the conflict in the Straits of Kerch, as the parties were actively working on preparations for the meeting between Trump and Putin in Buenos Aires. But things have changed quickly.
The Kremlin now has two important tasks. The first is to prove that Trump still does not ignore Putin. The myth of "president of a great power" implies that Putin may be in conflict, but he can only ignore it. As a result, members of the Russian delegation – and Putin's press officer Dmytro Peskov and his assistant, Yuri Ushakov – actively convey to the media the message that Trump still praised Putin, but this is not the only reason for the was not seen for one reason or another.
The second objective is to prove that the cancellation of the meeting was not motivated by the pirate acts conducted by Moscow in the Kerch Strait, but by "internal political circumstances" in the United States. After Trump's decision, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Russian propagandists were focusing on the issue. But what is interesting is that Trump himself continues to insist that the situation in the Black Sea has become the reason for the abolition of his meeting with Putin. He not only wrote about it in social networks, but also pointed to Buenos Aires after talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
A clear signal to Putin
The Kremlin does not seem to be able to understand a simple truth. The conflict in the Kerch Strait for Trump is also an internal political circumstance. Trump does not absolutely need his opponents to accuse him of Putin's vengeance at a time when the Russians are seizing Ukrainian ships without reason and arresting their crews. The President of the United States wants to avoid such accusations. In Argentina, he is opposed not only to Putin, but also to the Saudi successor, Prince Mohammed bin Salman al-Saud, suspected of having participated in the murder of a journalist. As a result, "the King of Vladimir" and Prince Mohammed must communicate one with the other.
This "cold war" of presidents does not mean that Trump and Putin will not meet again. It was simply that the US president could count on his dialogue with his Russian counterpart to unfold in an atmosphere of conflict resolution, de-escalation and not escalation. The denial of dialogue is a clear signal: if Putin wants to be noticed, he has to give up aggressive policies. And, of course, returning Ukrainian sailors and ships captured in their home country. The US president has said unequivocally.
