P resident Trump made the right choice by appointing State Department spokesman Heather Nauert as US ambassador to the United Nations.
As one might expect, however, some scornfully attack Nauert, a former journalist, as unqualified for the job. These critics are much more motivated by their hatred for Fox News, where Nauert previously worked, than by their honest assessments of reality, and they are mistaken.
First, as the state department's chief spokesperson, Nauert learned the nuts and bolts of the state department's bureaucracy. She also learned the three key elements to becoming an ambassador for the United States: being a team player, understanding the interests of US foreign policy and understanding the interests and nuances of other international players. For the Department of State to function effectively with a common goal, a senior official must demand respect from officials and other employees of the State Department and the Public Service. In defending his department, Nauert earned that respect.
Moreover, by defending the interests and allies of American foreign policy, Nauert is ready to transmit this message to the United States. The ambassador she replaces has also had little experience in foreign policy, but has done very well.
Nauert showed another important facet of preparation: a pushback against American opponents. Here, Nauert is distinguished by his deep understanding of the Russian propaganda machine. In many exchanges at the State Department, Nauert has aggressively reprimanded Russian agents of RT and other genuine false information. As the video below shows, Nauert even did so under the pressure of US journalists who do not understand what RT really is: that is, an operation that influences de facto information.
This trust will be absolutely essential in the United States, where Russian diplomats will strive every day to deceive the international community and undermine the interests of American politics. Outgoing ambassador Nikki Haley excelled in the defeat of these Russian efforts. Nauert showed that she had the temperament, the intellect and the eloquence to do the same.
I have long believed that Nauert is an excellent choice for this work.
