Thousand Oaks Shooting: Sgt. Ron Helus shot down by friendly fire, officials say

Sgt. According to Sheriff Bill Ayub of the Sheriff of Ventura County, Ron Helus was shot five times by the suspect, Ian David Long, but was hit by a sixth bullet from the rifle of a CHP officer.

Helus could have potentially survived the five wounds of Long's weapon, but the sixth bullet, fired by the CHP officer who entered the bar with Helus, proved fatal. According to Dr. Christopher Young, Ventura County Medical Officer, Helus was hit in the chest and heart.

"It's sad news and a tragedy," said Young, but it's ultimately the most serious injury. "

Young told reporters that officials were aware of Helus's injury, but that they were waiting to disclose the information before obtaining a confirmation of the FBI's ballistic analysis.
