LUMBERTON, NC – Police arrested and charged a man with killing a 13-year-old girl who was kidnapped last month in a mobile home park in North Carolina.
The FBI announced Saturday morning that Michael Ray McLellan was indicted for the kidnapping and murder of Hania Noelia Aguilar. The announcement comes the same day that a memorial service for Aguilar is expected to take place at a local high school.
McLellan, 34, faces first degree murder, rape and eight other crime counts. According to Raleigh News & Observer, he was released from jail in June and was still on parole following a break and enter conviction of 2017.
He was previously sentenced in 2007 for assault with a weapon and was released . he was on parole in 2016, the newspaper reported
. He is currently being held without bail at the Robeson County Detention Center. He will appear Monday in Robeson County Court.
McLellan was in detention at the time of his arrest on charges unrelated to the Aguilar case, police said.
On November 5, police said that Aguilar had gone out. Start a parent's SUV to get ready to leave for the bus stop when a man forced her to board the vehicle and escaped.
His disappearance triggered an intensive search. Drones, dogs and many walking researchers spent the following weeks combing the site. Police found her body several weeks later in a water plane about 16 km south of the mobile home park where she had been kidnapped.
"That's what we all feared," said Lumberton Police Chief Michael McNeill. journalists after the discovery of the body. "We did not want to hear that, we wanted to bring Hania home and bring her back alive in our community.
Police reported tracking more than 850 people and conducted nearly 500 interviews. The FBI laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, conducted a forensic examination of the stolen SUV, which was found a few days after Aguilar's initial disappearance. The North Crime Lab of North Carolina provided the results of tests on Aguilar's body. Police said the examinations contributed to McLellan's indictment.
A large attendance is expected at Aguilar 's funeral Saturday at Lumberton High School. His father, who lives in Guatemala, was denied an expedited visa to attend his daughter's funeral.
Police said the investigation was ongoing and that new charges could be filed.
