Winter disruption will bring snow and possibly blizzard conditions to parts of the northern Plains and Upper Midwest beginning Friday night. Meanwhile, further south, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected.

Much of the rain and wintry weather hits parts of the United States, and more severe winter conditions are looming, threatening much of the country, from the Carolinas to Texas.

The same winter storm that poured heavy rain in Los Angeles last week is expected to release heavy snow and ice this weekend as it heads south from the plains to the southeast. Generalized power outages, delayed and canceled flights and dangerous routes are to be expected.

The governors of Virginia and North Carolina announced the urgency of the situation in anticipation of the storm.

"It's certainly not unprecedented, but it's a major storm," said Dave Samuhel, Meteorologist at AccuWeather. "It's going to have a big impact."

Asheville, North Carolina, is expected to face a heavy storm load, with up to two feet of fall around most of the region this weekend, followed by dangerous and icy conditions At the beginning. the week. The east corner of Jackson County, along the Blue Ridge Parkway to Mount Pisgah, is expected to experience the heaviest snowfall, reaching almost two feet.

As of Saturday noon, there were 1,341 delayed flights and 120 canceled flights across the United States, according to FlightStats.com. George Bush International Airport in Houston reported 210 delayed flights.

American Airlines, United, Southwest, Delta and Frontier began to increase ticket change fees for some weekend flights in anticipation of the storm.

In scenes reminiscent of last year's deadly Hurricane Harvey flood, Houston motorists abandoned cars flooded by floodwaters. At least two cars were abandoned near downtown at the Memorial Drive overpass. from Houston Avenue and over a dozen cars blocked by high water on West Bellfort near US Highway 59, according to Click2Houston.com.
