An FBI surveillance officer in New York was hospitalized Saturday afternoon after being shot and wounded, but he is expected to survive, local and federal officials said.
The FBI office in New York posted a tweet shortly after 5 pm On Saturday, an officer was shot and taken to a local hospital without further details.
The officer, who was in plainclothes, was shot in the shoulder in the Canarsie section in Brooklyn, sources of public policy told ABC News.
According to sources, FBI agents were watching a car when people went to another car and shot at them. The agents fought back.
Earlier in the day, one of our officers was shot in Brooklyn and transported to a local hospital.

Two suspects were in detention on Saturday night, sources told ABC News.
Firefighters in New York City responded to a report of gunshot wounds at 3:22 pm Saturday, and two people were transported to local hospitals, said an FDNY spokesperson at ABC News. No other information was immediately available, the spokesman said.
One of the suspects was hit by hand, according to the New York TV channel WABC.
The identity of the second hospitalized person remained obscure Saturday night.
There are no suspects pending at this time. Expect a significant police presence in the area from 92nd Street and North Avenue to #Brooklyn as the investigation continues.

Two suspects fled in a car, according to ABC WABC station, but then arrested the vehicle at a nearby body shop. The first car was in the body shop with bullet holes, reported WABC.
The agent, whose name was not disclosed, was taken to the Brooklyn County Hospital, officials said.
New York Police Chief Terence Monahan said in a tweet that he was expecting an important police presence in the area of the Saturday night shootout.
