A Detroit area man who sexually assaulted a sleeping passenger aboard a plane from Spirit Airlines was sentenced Thursday to nine years in prison.
On January 3, Prabhu Ramamoorthy attacked the woman during a night flight connecting Las Vegas to Detroit. While she was sleeping at the window, Ramamoorthy unbuttoned her top, caressed her breasts, pulled off her pants and penetrated her numerically.
The Detroit Free Press reported that prosecutors, who were seeking a 130-month prison sentence, called the incident "one of the most brutal sexual assaults on a plane, never been prosecuted in the district ".
According to Ramamoorthy newspaper, who resides in the United States on a visa working with his wife, refused to speak at the sentencing hearing. He did not apologize or remorse to the victim while she was sitting across the room accompanied by a comforting dog.
She also refused to address Ramamoorthy.
The 35-year-old man lowered his head and cried as he came out of the audience room with chains.
"Everyone has the right to be safe when traveling on airplanes", said American lawyer Matthew Schneider in a statement.
"We will not tolerate the behavior of those who benefit victims in a vulnerable position, and we thank the victim in this case for his courage to express himself," Schneider added.

"In arguing for leniency, Ramamoorthy 's lawyer, James Amberg, argued that his client, a computer scientist graduated from the University of New York. university that had moved to the United States in 2015 – lived a clean and productive life prior to this incident.He had no criminal record in the United States or India.

Ramamoorthy was convicted by a jury in August at the end of a five-day trial, and the jury deliberated about three and a half hours before rendering the verdict guilty.
He will be deported after jail time.
