One of Mick Mulvaney's first tasks as Donald Trump's acting chief of staff may be to explain why he publicly described his boss as a "terrible human being".
A video of Mulvaney, a former Republican congressman, confessed his disdain for Trump shortly before the November 2016 presidential election.
"Yes, I support Donald Trump; I do it with as much enthusiasm as possible. In fact, I think he's a terrible human being, "Mulvaney said. In evoking Hillary Clinton, Trump's opponent, Mulvaney added, "But the choice on the other side is just as bad."
The filmed talk, published by the Daily Beast, took place during a debate between Mulvaney and Democrat Fran Person in York, South Carolina.
After Trump's unexpected electoral victory, Mulvaney became a key element of the administration, at one point in time, both the White House budget manager and the Consumer Protection Bureau.
Highly conservative, Mulvaney outlined his cuts in spending that Congress refused, as well as a relaxation of consumer protection rules.
He now becomes, at least temporarily, Trump's last chief of staff. John Kelly, a retired naval general, is expected to retire at the end of the year. Kelly, in turn, replaced Reince Priebus, Trump's first chief of staff.
The quest for a Chief of Staff was not smooth and was further defined by the people who declined the work that lined up to fill it. His first choice was Nick Ayers, Chief of Staff to Vice President Mike Pence, who retired after being unable to agree on the length of his tenure. Friday, the former New Jersey governor, Chris Christie, is himself declared excluded.
