An app store for alternative gadgets for Apple announced the disconnect the possibility of downloading applications. Cydia developer Jay Freeman, known as Saurik, announced his decision after discovering an internal repository error that could cause data leaks. The store can not resume its work, it can be closed.
Only users who download paid add-ons from unreliable repositories may suffer from a Cydia error. At the same time, as the developer said, leaks from these payment accounts were avoided.
Freeman also announced the possible closure of Cydia by the end of the year. Among the reasons, besides the security problems, the founder of the service called the loss of motivation to lead a project with losses.
The first step to stop the market was already activated – it blocked the possibility of buying new settings. At the same time, the ability to download previously purchased add-ons remained.
Cydia Service appeared 10 years ago, shortly after the piracy of the first iPhone. The name of the store comes from Cydia pomonella – apple carrot. Cydia is an application store that is not located on the official Apple App Store and uses the advanced features of Apple mobile devices that open after a crack, called jailbreak. It opens access to the private file system of Apple gadgets, allows you to modify previously unavailable settings, and so on. Similar apps are called Tweaks and are available in Cydia. Apple does not officially support the jailbreak: the broken devices are devoid of warranty and technical support.
Despite the increasing difficulty of jailbreak and the loss of interest of users, Electra developers develop a Sileo application that completely replaces Cydia. For the first time, the existence of Sileo was known in the summer of 2018 and the developers announced that the application will come out when it will be ready. In December 2018, the percentage of readiness remains unknown.
