A police officer was killed Wednesday at a traffic stop in Newman City, in the Central Valley, which prompted the suspect to conduct extensive research.
33-year-old officer Ronil Singh was shot dead shortly before 1 am, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office announced. The gunman fled before his colleagues reacted to the report of the shots.
Images were released, showing a man seen in a convenience store roughly at the time of the shooting and the truck he allegedly drove, a Dodge Ram 1500 with gray or silver extended cab, 2002 model years at 2009, with paper registration plates.
A "blue alert" was sent at 7:30 am and 8:20 am to mobile phone users in Stanislaus, Merced, San Joaquin, Tuolumne, and Santa Clara counties.
Newman is a small town off the coast from Interstate 5 north of Los Banos. Singh had been a police officer there since 2011.
