Richard Overton, a 112-year-old veteran, considered the oldest man in the United States and officially the second oldest fighter of the Second World War, died in a rehabilitation center in Austin, Texas. His family reported

Overton gained a lot of attention in the last years of his life because of his age and service during World War II.

Richard Overton was born on May 11, 1906 in Bastrop, Texas. He was called into the army in 1942, nine months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Overton served in the 188th Airborne Battalion and Engineer, composed entirely of black Americans. He has served on various Pacific War Theater islands, including Yosemite and Okinawa.

Overton is married twice but did not have children.

He was honored in 2013 by President Barack Obama at the ceremony of the day. Veterans at Arlington National Cemetery and was also invited to the White House.
