A 7-year-old girl was shot dead in a Walmart parking lot in Houston early Sunday when an armed gunman opened fire on a vehicle in which she was traveling with her mother and three other girls, announced the authorities.

"Mother and daughter were in a car leaving a store when an unknown man started shooting in their car for an unknown reason, "said sheriff Ed Gonzalez on Twitter.
Jesse Razo, a sheriff 's office major, said at a press briefing that the suspect was driving a red pickup truck without plates.
The suspect "approached the vehicle and started shooting in the vehicle," Razo said.
The girl's mother was also affected, said Gonzalez. She was injured on the arm but should survive, officials said.
In addition to the girl and her mother, two teenage girls and a girl were also in the car, said Gonzalez: the teenage girls were not injured and the girl suffered "injuries caused by fragments of glass ".
Razo said the girls were "shaken" and "devastated".
The suspect, who was wearing a red hooded sweater, escaped into a red truck, said Gonzalez. He has been described as forty years old and a beard, Razo said.
He was still on the run on Sunday morning.
"He is considered armed and dangerous," said Razo.
The reason for the shooting was not immediately known.
Homicide detectives roamed the area and checked the surveillance video for clues.
"We will use all available resources to bring this murderer to justice," said Razo.
He urged the suspect to surrender.
"Because we will pick you up, we will locate you, we will find you," said Razo.
