Austria has blocked amendments to the EU Gas Directive concerning the North Stream Pipeline

A Polish Radio Report

This change is intended to ensure that all pipelines, including pipelines imported European law covers their maritime parts within the EU.

Poland, the Baltic States and the Nordic countries believe that investments such as the North Stream 2 pose a threat to Europe's energy security, since they only add to it . supply of Russian gas.

In addition, according to Jerzy Buzek, chairman of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, these pipelines "can be used for purposes of economic and political pressure".

The extension of the North Stream 2 gas directive would greatly complicate the realization of this investment, since the cost would be considerably increased. However, work on the gas directive was halted due to the blockade of Austria, which presided over this semester in the EU. Vienna has thus defended the interests of a project company and wishes to produce gas from Russia.

The end of this investment is scheduled for December of next year. Should it fall under the EU gas directive, the provisions should be approved by spring.
