N York governor Andrew Cuomo granted clemency to 29 people on Monday, including immigrants threatened with deportation.
On the eve of the New Year, the Democrats attacked President Trump for the partial closure of the government, which stems from a stalemate over funding for border security.
"While President Trump deters the federal government from keeping its obsession with keeping immigrants out, New York continues to steadfastly support immigrant communities," said Cuomo. "These actions will help maintain the cohesion of immigrant families and take a decisive step towards a more just, equitable and compassionate New York."
Twenty-two of those who have benefited from a pardon are immigrants who, because of their convictions for drug-related offenses, could have been deported.
Of the remaining seven persons whose sentences were commuted, four are sentenced for murder and three others in prison for armed robbery.
According to the Cuomo office statement, the 29 people "provided substantial evidence of rehabilitation and a commitment to reducing crime in the community".
Cuomo will be sworn in for a third term on Tuesday at Ellis Island, which dealt for about 60 years until 1954 with millions of immigrants entering the United States
