This group of women, who participated in a local democratic campaign called "Black Girl Magic Texas", first marked history – and made the headlines – by winning their mid-term elections respective in November. Together, they form what appears to be the largest group of female black judges to be elected at the same time in the history of Harris County.
The Harris County Democratic Party released photos of the swearing-in ceremony held on Tuesday morning.
"Today we are inaugurating a new era of representative government and progressive leadership in Harris County," the group writes.
The audience was invited to attend the ceremony and the footage from the event, coming from CNN affiliate, KHOU, show a packed house.
County Judge Lina Hidalgo was also invested on Tuesday. Hidalgo is a 27-year-old Colombian immigrant who replaced outgoing Republican Ed Emmett in November. At the time, Emmett had been a country judge for over a decade.
Hidalgo spoke at length about the importance of diversity in the Harris County government. "We marked the history of Harris County on November 6 by electing a group of talented people who reflect the people and communities we serve," she said in a press release for the ceremony. Tuesday. "It would not have been possible without the support of the people of Harris County."
Harris County, which includes Houston, is the largest county in the state. According to the most recent census data, 43% of Harris County residents are Hispanic and nearly 20% of County residents identify as African-Americans.
